Since its beginnings more than 120 years ago, Rotary has grown into a worldwide service organisation, bringing together approximately 1.2 million Rotary and Rotaract members through more than 45,000 clubs in over 200 countries and geographical areas. Its members come from many cultures and backgrounds, yet are united by shared values and a commitment to creating lasting benefits for others. In New Zealand, Rotary’s community extends beyond our towns and suburbs to include clubs and communities throughout our Pacific neighbourhood.

Rotary club presidents and directors are elected annually by their members. This regular rotation of leadership encourages fresh ideas and gives members frequent opportunities to develop their leadership skills and take on greater responsibility. Incoming officers are formally welcomed into their roles at the club’s annual changeover event, before beginning their terms at the start of the new Rotary year on 1 July.

For organisational purposes, Rotary clubs throughout the world are divided into: Areas, Districts and Zones. The Rotary Zones were updated by Rotary International as of 1 July 2026.
